SAMe, also known as S-Adenosyl L-Methionine, is a dietary supplement used for liver support. K9 SAMe is designed for dogs. Each bottle contains 60 tablets of 400 mg of S-Adenosyl-L-Methionine Disulfate Tosylate and a net of 200 mg of SAMe per tablet. K9 Choice SAMe is enteric-coated, which enhances bioavailability and stability.

SAMe is often recommended for dogs with Canine Cushing’s Disease because this adrenal disorder causes stress on the liver and forces the liver to work harder. Supplementation with SAMe, which is naturally occurring in the body, can be very helpful for ailing dogs because naturally occurring SAMe is used up quickly when the liver is overworked.

SAMe supports a healthy liver by improving metabolism in the liver. SAMe is a nutrient that carries and donates methyl molecules necessary to facilitate the manufacture of DNA and brain neurotransmitters. SAMe boosts hepatic levels of the antioxidant glutamine. It is formed in the body by an enzymatic reaction between adenosine-triphosphate (ADP) and methionine. SAMe works closely with folic acid and vitamin B-12 and functions as a methyl donor for the manufacturing of phosphatidylcholine and L-cysteine, both of which are necessary for maintaining liver health.

SAMe levels are greatly reduced in the elderly and supplementation can be very beneficial when the liver is stressed over overworked. SAMe contains antioxidants that help reduce oxygen-free radicals. SAMe is used for mood support and healthy liver functions. It provides nutritional support for the liver and helps return normal liver function.

K9 Choice SAMe is packaged with nitrogen. This reduces the oxygen content in the package, which helps prevent the breakdown of the product and keeps it fresh for a longer period of time. This helps prevent oxidation.

Active ingredients

Inactive ingredients: Microcrystalline cellulose, croscarmellose sodium, ascorbyl palmitate, silica, ascorbic acid and citric acid. Enteric coating (methacrylic acid copolymer, hydroxypropyl methylcellulose, hydroxypropyl cellulose, calcium carbonate, riboflavin (colorant) and propylene glycol).

Indications for use

K9 Choice SAMe is indicated as a dietary supplement used for liver support.

Administration and dosage

For medium sized dogs 21 lbs to 40 lbs: give 1 tablet per day.
For large dogs 41 lbs to 80 lbs: give 2 tablets per day.
For very large dogs over 80 lbs: give 3-4 tablets per day.

K9 Choice SAMe is best for dogs over 20 lbs; however, for small dogs under 20 lbs: give 1/2 tablet per day. When the tablet is cut in half, the second half must be thrown away because when the enteric coating is cut, the product loses bioavailability and stability.

K9 Choice SAMe should be ingested whole. It is usually recommended to give SAMe on an empty stomach; however, it can be given to your dog in peanut butter, cheese, a pill pocket, a small amount of food, etc. if necessary. If your dog will not take it, you may cut/crush the tablet, but it must be given to your dog immediately as it is an enteric-coated tablet.
