Haloperidol is a very strong neuroleptic. It is used to calm dogs before general anesthesia. It is also used, with limited success, in the treatment of aggression and other behavioral disorders. Haloperidol is prescribed for the treatment of epilepsy in cats. This medication is known as a dopamine antagonist, which is a class of drugs that bind to and block dopamine receptors. These receptors play an important role in many neurological processes, like movement coordination, pleasure, cognition, memory, and learning. When these receptors don’t function properly, it can lead to several neurological and psychiatric illnesses. Haloperidol comes in an oral solution.

Active ingredients

Haloperidol oral solution contains 2 mg per mL of haloperidol.

Inactive ingredients: Lactic acid, methylparaben, propylparaben, propylene glycol, purified water, and sodium hydroxide to adjust pH.

Indications for use

Haloperidol has been used to calm dogs prior to administration of general anesthesia. It has met with limited success in the treatment of aggression and other behavioral disorders. In cats, haloperidol has been tried for the treatment of some forms of epilepsy.
